Marshall University Commons Student Housing and Dining Hall

Architect: Eihorn Yaffee Prescott, Bastian & Harris Architects

The Marshall Commons 177,000 Sq. Ft. complex consists of four new residence halls: Gibson, Wellman, Haymaker, and Willis; along with the Harless Dining.  The 500-bed facility provides students with an apartment-style environment, offering 3 suite configurations: 4 single occupancy bedrooms, 2 double occupancy bedrooms, or 4 double occupancy bedrooms.  The project began with Neighborgall, the University and the design team developing a list of possible cost savings items totaling over $1,300,000.  Major utility relocation and site development were required.  The four-story residence hall structures were concrete planks bearing on masonry and spread footings. All buildings in the complex were conditioned by a four-pipe heating / cooling system originating in the basement of the dining hall.  Maintaining a demanding completion schedule was the key to a successful project.  The residence halls were completed in sixteen months.
